I'll start with Lindsey Weirsma whom I sat beside on the American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Miami. On long flights to pass time, I often enjoy getting to know the people beside me. Sometimes I am less than impressed with whom I am talking. But with Lindsey I met somebody truly trying to improve this world. Lindsey works with the Children of the Promise orphanage as an adoption assistant in Haiti. It is a challenging job. The kids come to the orphanage in so many different ways. Sometimes a parent dies and the other has too many pressures. Hurricanes and natural disasters may make it impossible for families to take care of their children, she said. There were many other reasons. Illness, birth defects, learning disorders--all of these become the rationale for giving up on children. It is a poor country. A mother might simply not be able to take on more kids, especially with the birth of yet another. For all of these and other reasons, kids end up at Children of the Promise.
At the same time, the Haitian government doesn't necessarily make it easy for people interested in adopting the children, either, and the country itself can be somewhat depressing. Lindsey mentioned that she could go weeks without even seeing a single bird. Why? Because unlike the Dominican Republican, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, virtually all of the forests of Haiti have been destroyed. Much of the destruction has been and reamins simply for charcoal, a destructive process we are also witnessing in Somalia and elsewhere throughout the Horn of Africa. Short-term needs for fuel replace long-term needs for a sustainable environment. Extreme poverty is the result.

The Black Duck Restaurant at the Park South Hotel has a great grilled organic roasted chicken. Everything else was great too.
Buses are electric powered as this one explicitly states on its side panel.
That was really cool, by the way. Because the last thing you want to breathe in a beautiful city like New York is gas or diesel fumes. God only knows how many we breathe everyday when we suck up the vapors where we live in Los Angeles.
I found New Yorkers to be very open to being green. The most fun things to do in the city are to walk and talk and maybe take a rowboat or gondola on the lake in Central Park or a horse-drawn carriage ride or pedal cart ride, or use public transportation. In every aspect, green means sanity in New York City. (Green also brings sanity to my life too, by the way.)
